Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) for drop foot and gait rehabilitation

The term dorsiflexor weakness is not commonly known, but the symptoms it describes are familiar to many. One side of the body is paralysed, primarily after a stroke, but also as a result of multiple sclerosis and incomplete paraplegia and traumatic brain injury. When walking, the arm hangs and the foot scuffs the ground. This is commonly known as drop foot.

For people with dorsiflexor weakness, every step requires high concentration because they tend to scuff their toes along the ground. Even a stone or a small uneven spot can become a big obstacle. Some people may swing the leg forward using their hip muscles. This requires more effort and leads to bad posture, which may result in back pain. Long distances are often avoided as a result of muscle fatigue setting in. This can lead to a withdrawal from social life and activities, and quality of life suffers.

MyGait is a surface stimulator, acting on your nerves via electrodes placed on your skin to transform the way you walk.

Functional electrical stimulation (FES) via MyGait lifts the foot at just the right time in the gait cycle, correcting your drop foot and making walking faster and more efficient.

A small switch you wear under your heel sends a wireless signal to the stimulator worn on a cuff just below your knee. The stimulator can then activate the muscles responsible for lifting your foot. This can result in an improved and more natural gait, reducing the risk of falls.

As a bonus, your lower leg muscles are exercised with MyGait, and they can get stronger, which can also make walking easier.

MyGait Heel Switch

The heel switch senses when the foot leaves the ground. It sends this information wirelessly to the stimulator held within the cuff, which in turn stimulates the nerve via surface electrodes. The stimulated nerve activates the muscles to lift the foot – at just the right time.

The MyGait® cuff is applied to the lower leg, which can be easily done with just one hand. In addition, you wear a heel switch under your foot in a specially designed sock.

New Cuff Soft

The MyGait Cuff Soft is the slimmest FES cuff available in the market. Designed specifically to be easy to put on and take off using only one hand, the unique design is comfortable and breathable.

How does it work?

The MyGait Cuff Soft works by providing an electrical impulse that is delivered to the nerve which stimulates the muscle into movement. A heel switch sensor communicates wirelessly with the cuff and electrodes to stimulate the appropriate nerve at the right time and frequency during the walking cycle.

About MyGait®

Integrated 2nd channel

A special feature of MyGait® is the integrated 2nd channel. This makes it possible that an additional muscle group can be stimulated. Thus, for example, the gait pattern can be further with improved with knee stimulation to give additional support when walking. The 2nd channel can be switched on selectively.

Walk faster and longer!

We recommend charging the device every night. If you sit for an extended period, for example in a theatre, you can switch the device to sleep mode to reduce the stimulators‘ energy consumption. A tip for the care of your MyGait® system: all its fabric components can be hand-washed.

Is MyGait right for me?

MyGait is suitable for people with drop foot or dorsal flexor weakness caused by stroke, brain injury, multiple sclerosis or incomplete paralysis.

There will be some instances where surface stimulation won’t be effective, so please ask your doctor or therapist whether MyGait is suitable for you.
